The Moat and Casemate
No matter how many times I visit Fort Monroe, I am always amazed by the construction of the stone walls and moat.
The walls of Fort Monroe were constructed from granite taken from rock quarries in Virginia and Maryland.
The outside walls of the fort are 10 feet thick. Designed by Simon Bernard, a French military engineer, the 35 sections of wall surrounding Fort Monroe’s 63 acres of land stretches 1.3 miles around.
A fascinating structure to explore!
