Scarlet in a Flurry
A stunning photograph of winter contrasts: bright white snow, brown branches and a crimson red cardinal.
Taken in Newport News, Virginia winter of 2015.
This northern cardinal species was named by colonists for the male's red crest, reminiscent of a Catholic cardinal's mitre.
Other members of the Cardinalidae family include American sparrows (unrelated to Old World sparrows), juncos, and towhees and grosbeaks, sometimes called "cardinal-grosbeaks."
