• The Betsy

‘The Betsy’ was a merchant ship (75 by 23 ft) built in 1772 at Whitehaven, England. In 1781, between 50-60 British ships were sunk in the York River following the unsuccessful campaign by British General Charles Cornwallis. Near the end of his siege and surrender, Cornwallis scuttled 10-12 ships in an attempt to block the shoreline with the masts. There is evidence that “The Betsy” was among those ships that had its bow cut to allow it to sink.

The excavation of ‘The Betsy’ began in October 1982 and again 1983 by John Broadwater and the Virginia Division of Historic Landmarks. Many items were recovered from ‘The Betsy’ including brass hooks and hardware, a fashionable chair, buttons, 10,000 musketballs, and barrels.

This replica is showcased near the entrance of the Waterman’s Museum in Yorktown, Virginia near the base of the Coleman Bridge.
