Spider Mums
A native to eastern and southern Asia, the ‘Lycoris’ were imported into North Carolina and now grow wild.
In English they are called hurricane lilies, cluster amaryllis, spider lily, or spider mum.
Since these flowers usually bloom near cemeteries in the fall, they are described in Chinese and Japanese legends as a flower of sorrow or death and are therefore used often in Asia for funerals. Another legend says that when a person sees someone that they may never meet again, these flowers, would bloom along the path. No matter the legend, it is still a beautiful reminder that the cooler season of autumn is just around the corner.
