Orchids II
The orchid of choice for florists, this purple orchid is a member of a huge genus of orchids known as ‘Dendrobium’. The name comes from the Greek Dendron (“tree”) and bios (“life”); meaning “one who lives on trees.”
This genus ‘Dendrobium’ was established in 1799 by Olof Swartz, a Swedish botanist and taxonomist. Today, the genus contains about 1,200 species.
